when this movie came out in 1982, my very conservative private school had us all march almost two miles to the Senator Theater to see it. during the school day. what they now call woke we all agreed then was just civilization.

there is very little about Stephen Miller’s worldview for which i am grateful, but i have to confess i thank the goddess he is not the kind of progressive who would would have taken his wife’s last name.
(i first encountered a post saying he got banned for image and its alt text, which seemed pretty indefensible to me. it became less indefensible (thanks @segyges.bsky.social) when i learned the image and alt text were a QT. still have mixed views about the ban, but less egregious than i thought.)
(though i stand by a preference to err on the side of permissiveness when one must err, the particular case we are obliquely not discussing i keep finding out about in fragments. i was not aware of the full context when posting earlier, probably am not aware of the full context yet.)

Remarkable that so few people participating in a life-or-death tournament to escape permanent precarity make space for expensive, time-consuming outside interests.
maybe the reason why you see fewer American and European young people traveling isn’t their lack of interest or adventurousness, but the fact the West has grown profoundly more unequal, and the tourist industry caters to dollars, not bodies, and dollars are disproportionately in older hands.
