power and wisdom don't correlate among individuals. if anything the connection is inverse. wisdom is always hard, but to be consistent it has to be institutional. we need to build powerful institutions in a world made of politically equal humans.

I posted some quotes from an alarming post, but @bananapantz.bsky.social points out that the date the security flaws begins is January 9, too early to be explained as claimed by activity of DOGE. I've deleted my initial post, pending some clarification or explanation of the apparent discrepency. 1/

DOGE doesn’t have to search far to find waste either!

If DOGE wants to find fraud in government, they don't have to look very far. I suspect the restrooms in most Federal office buildings have mirrors.

"When reporters called this out, the DOGE team made a fascinating choice. Instead of fixing their error, they actually removed the correct document from their website and replaced it with the old, incorrect one. They are now deliberately posting false information to support the narrative."

Called my Congressional delegation to express my disgust at the President’s turn against Ukraine. Two Senators’ voicemails, one exasperated House staffer. Doesn’t take long. Can’t hurt. If we act like we live in a democracy we still might.

they just test our theories of mind, these people. it's not just that they make evil choices, choices which they seem to know and understand to be evil. they do. but they baffle us, because there is no particular reason why. he's retiring. he's not long for this world. why?

the one norm the "international community"—especially the United States—has pretty consistently enforced post WWII is that recognized borders, however historically contingent and artificial, are sacrosanct and not to be violated by military force. letting this one go is opening the gates to hell.

microsoft always astonishes me. it's allegedly an IT company. i renewed my Excel subscription yesterday, after i let it expire. today they write me — twice, same e-mail — "Your Microsoft 365 subscription has expired" asking me to renew. it was queued yesterday or whatever. information technology.
