power and wisdom don't correlate among individuals. if anything the connection is inverse. wisdom is always hard, but to be consistent it has to be institutional. we need to build powerful institutions in a world made of politically equal humans.

they just test our theories of mind, these people. it's not just that they make evil choices, choices which they seem to know and understand to be evil. they do. but they baffle us, because there is no particular reason why. he's retiring. he's not long for this world. why?
