Higher education would be better if the people who participate in it, both as students and as educators, were there, on the terms they are there, because they affirmatively choose it rather than in order to pursue instrumental derivative goals.

it gives me some hope that, since the American auto industry has protected itself into obsolescence and global irrelevance, US consumer demand will eventually break it, enabling a political economy capable of conceiving saner, more efficient, lifestyles not dependent on a personal automobile.
