Higher education would be better if the people who participate in it, both as students and as educators, were there, on the terms they are there, because they affirmatively choose it rather than in order to pursue instrumental derivative goals.

it's weird that it's people "on the left" who argue for single-price markets and redistribution of purchasing power, while people "on the right" argue for price-discrimination as the best redistributative tool. 1/

i guess the cynical explanation is that while price discrimination redistributes among consumers, it's only gravy on the producer side, for the asset-owning class. /fin

I've a surprisingly elaborate infrastructure for static-site generation that AFAIK only I use. Trying to sell a friend on giving it a try, I've built a static-site-generator-generator for sites that will publish themselves on push via GitHub Pages. Can I sell you on giving it a try, friend?

I find it interesting how much better the 80s-style indoor mall is faring in other countries where I spend time (Romania, Uruguay) than in the United States that invented and popularized it.

one problem with bluesky is it’s the same main character every day and it’s gotten old.

it’s a kind of talent to be able to cynically confabulate then make yourself immediately, fervently, resentfully, believe your own tall tales.

does “efficiency” make us wealthier or is it a marker of our poverty?

Steve Randy Waldman
@interfluidity.com

it gives me some hope that, since the American auto industry has protected itself into obsolescence and global irrelevance, US consumer demand will eventually break it, enabling a political economy capable of conceiving saner, more efficient, lifestyles not dependent on a personal automobile.

i love old fashioned machine politics because if the dead really did vote they could have a party and its slogan could be “vote boo no matter who”.
